You might ask why a board certified geriatrican would want to create a blog. Well, for one, I LOVE my job and want to share about the wonderful journeys that I am able to experience because of the patients I treat. I am grateful for every patient encounter that I have and hope to share some of my experiences with you (and the rest of the world) so that my patients can be honored and perhaps their experiences (and mine) might help somebody who is going through similar circumstances.
I am board certified in 3 medical specialties: Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, along with Hospice and Palliative Care. I have been practicing medicine for over 15 years. My love for medicine started at a very young age (6 to be exact). At that time, my parents tell me that I made a declaration that I was going to be a brain surgeon. That obviously did not happen. Instead, I found my way to another field of medicine that is incredibly rewarding and challenging. I am not exactly sure when my interest in geriatrics began, but I suspect that my close relationship with my grandparents is where the interest is rooted. I have a deep respect for the elderly and am truly honored caring for the seniors of our society.
The majority of my practice at this time is focused in the skilled nursing home setting. I care for patients who have just recently been hospitalized and are transferred to a skilled nursing home to complete their recovery. The average age of my patient is 83. The patients I treat have a range of diagnoses including strokes, heart attacks, pneumonia, hip fractures, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeds, delirium, dementia, cancer and numerous others. Although every patient’s experience and circumstance is unique, there are many common “discussions” that I have with people. Through this blog site, I plan to share those “discussions” as well as, my candid opinions, observations, and thoughts regarding a broad array of topics affecting the geriatric population.
